We aim to provide youths from poor families in Teresopolis, Brazil with a second language as a tool to improve future employability.
By volunteering as a fluentfuture online tutor, you can change the lives of many youths who are passionate about learning. Get involved in our promising fluentfuture program!
Centro Social Sao Jose, administered by the nuns from Irmas Carmelitas da Divina Providencia, used to provide shelter to homeless children in Teresopolis, 40km off Rio de Janeiro.
Due to a lack of funding as well as space, the house was converted into a childcare centre in the 1990s. Centro Social Sao Jose is now supported by public donations from the Carmo Educational Network as well as voluntary contributions from private businesses.
At present, Centro Social Sao Jose provides free daycare to 86 children between the ages of 6-12 of mothers who have to work during the day. The great majority of parents who use the services of Centro Social Sao Jose work as maids, nursery teachers, kitchen staff, and house-keepers.
Casa Sao Jose is a simple, neat and clean second home which offers a variety of activities such as arts, tuition support, cooking, religious classes and many others.
The children attend school in the morning and are sent to Casa Sao Jose in the afternoon or vice-versa. The kids do not stay there overnight. In short, there are no children living there anymore.
Most of the staff are volunteers: cook, carers, teachers, educators. In case of necessity, the nuns pay very few people. Staff support is given on a voluntary part-time basis.
By donating an hour or two a week, you can help bring joy to the hearts of children at Centro Social Sao Jose besides teaching them some real skills for life. With improved proficiency in a second language and exposure to international culture, we hope it can improve their chances in social mobility.
